Han the Sushi Man
I originally started writing this post a few months ago. At that time, I was buying sushi from Price Cutter on Maiden Lane on a weekly basis. The sushi was made daily, then packaged and displayed in a refrigerated case in the fresh seafood/meat section of the store.
Sometimes on my trips to Price Cutter, I would see a man behind the counter working on the sushi rolls. Quick to smile, he always offered to make me any sushi that I couldn’t find in the case. Sometimes I would place an order with him, pick up a few needed groceries, then be on my way home within about ten minutes with a quick, convenient, and healthy meal.
But what I loved most about buying sushi from Price Cutter was that it was exceptionally good. I felt everyone in Joplin needed to know about this pleasant and talented man who made incredible sushi at a grocery store. So, I asked him what his name was (it was Han), took home a menu, snapped some photos of our sushi and got ready to write a post.
Then I saw the announcement on Facebook: Han would no longer be making sushi at Price Cutter (crushing news). However, he would be opening his own restaurant, with both dine-in and carryout options (joyous news!). But, there would be a lapse in time from when he stopped selling sushi at Price Cutter until his restaurant opened (crushing news, again).
Now for the greatest news of all: Han the Sushi Man has finally opened his restaurant!
With cheerful, lime-colored walls and handmade light fixtures (a Pinterest project tackled by Han’s wife Hollee), the restaurant is colorful, clean, and modern.
Diners can enjoy Han’s creations while seated at a table or at the sushi bar.
But the wonderfully unique thing about the restaurant is that customers can also run inside and grab some sushi to go from a refrigerated display area in front of the sushi bar. There are even parking spaces designated for pickup-only. Brilliant!
Here is the to-go menu:
My favorite rolls are the Spicy California and Crunchy Shrimp. My husband likes the eel, both the Nigiri (with the piece of eel served on top of rice) and in a roll.
I just tried the Spring Roll for the first time and was blown away. Packed with fresh lettuce, veggies and huge shrimp, it was crunchy and refreshing.
Han chooses quality ingredients and presents them artistically. And he is consistent, a fact to which his faithful followers can attest (myself included).
Most importantly, he’s a hard worker and has a great rapport with his customers. Han the Sushi Man is a welcome addition to the Joplin restaurant community.
Han the Sushi Man is located at 1902 E. 32nd St., Suite 7. Click here to go to Han the Sushi Man’s Facebook page.
